1. Nobody wants to suffer; everybody wants to be abidingly happy.
2. But most of us are suffering. A lot.
3. The key to suffering is to see that what we essentially are has gotten to be all mixed up with what we aren’t.
4. The direct path teaching offers ample ways of disentangling.
5. Here’s one in connection with a feeling:
- Experience #1: Sensation-arising.
- Experience #2: Thought-arising: “This is X,” where X = loneliness, anger, fear, etc. Fill in X.
- Experience #3: Thought-arising: “I can’t stand to be with this experience.”
Explore: Ask yourself, “Do I find a separate self in any of my experiences?” Specifically:
- Is there a separate self in #1, #2, or #3?
- Is there a separate self between #1 and #2 or between #2 and #3?
- Can #1, #2, or #3 refer to a separate something outside of the sensation-arising or the thought-arising. In particular, can any of these refer to: (a) a body? (b) a mind? (c) an ego?
6. What do you discover? No suffering, only peace.
