‘Know All This Universe To Be Formless’

One could hardly do better than to follow this glorious meditation from Avadhuta Gita I.41:

Know all this universe to be formless. Know all this universe to be devoid of transformation. Know all this universe to be pure existence [sat] itself. Know all this universe to be of the nature of the Supreme Beatitude [ananda].

A line-by-line meditation:

1. Experience hearing. Then take away all sound. Feel directly the formless presence that’s always already the case. Abide.

2. Now, without name, without form, how can hearing rise and set? From what (else) would it rise? Into what (else) would it set? Know the very essence of hearing–that is, sat, or presence–to be being. Know being to be incapable of coming into or going out of being. Know this.

3. Without name, without form, simply taste pure existence, or being, itself. Abide.

4. What is the nature of this universe? Being. And when you “stay only” with being, is it not fullness? Yes. And isn’t this fullness abiding peace? Yes. This is Supreme Beatitude. Abide.
