An Argument Against The Possible Existence of Ego

1. The ego is said to be the “mixing up” of the Self with the non-self.

2. Is this even possible?

3. If two things can be said to be mixed up, then there must be (at least) one point of contact where the first touches the second.

4. Consider: Does the Self (one experience) ever “touch” or “make contact with” another experience (e.g., hearing)? No, this is never our direct experience. Our direct experience never reveals “twoness,” only seamless, unbroken experiencingness.

5. Since it’s not possible for there to be an experience of twoness, it’s not possible for there to be contact between “two things.” And since contact is not possible, how could mixing up ever be possible?

6. Since mixing up isn’t even possible and since ego was defined in terms of the mixing up of the Self with the non-self, it follows that ego does not and cannot exist.
