Existential Fear: 3 Approaches

Question: I have this deep down existential fear that I can’t seem to get beyond. It’s been with me for so long that it’s become a familiar companion. What should I do?

Investigate.

Step 1: Is It Real?

Ask yourself, “Is this existential fear really real?”

For how could fear, which is presumed to be an entity or object, be real when only our essential nature (satchitananda) is real?

Step 2: Does It Matter?

IF the fear seems real, then go one level down. Ask yourself, “Does it matter that this fear is here?”

Does it “have to” go away?

Does it matter that, as you said, I “haven’t gotten past the fear” (my emphasis)?

Is it necessary, as you posit, to “rip the band-aid off”?

Is it necessary to “keep looking” for a “breakthrough”?

Step 3: Being With This Fear Forever

IF it seems as if the fear really does matter, then go one level down. Ask: “Can I be with this existential fear forever?”

Can you be with the impulse to get rid of it?

Can you be with the aversion you have to it?

Can you be with whatever arises as you sit quietly with this existential fear?
