Who Is The One Having This Dream?

1. Sights, sounds, textures, flavors, and scents are all dreams. That is, all perceptions “of the world” are dreams.

2. Sensations and body images are all dreams. That is, the body is a dream.

3. Thoughts, feelings, and desires are all dreams. That is, the mind in the narrow sense is a dream.

4. In sum, the world, the body, and the mind (in the narrow sense) are all dreams.

5. Therefore, the entire waking state is a dream.

6. The fundamental question, then, is: “who is the one having this waking state dream?”

7. In the dream state, it’s clear that the finite mind is projecting the dreamscape in which all dream characters, including the dreaming subject, appear. Isn’t it likewise clear that the finite mind, in the broad sense, is “dreaming up” all perceptions, sensations, and thoughts in the current waking dream state?

8. But then we’re thrown back on the question: “whose finite mind is this?”

9. The only way to know this is to directly scrutinize this one, this I: “Who is this I, really?” To find this out is to go beyond all dreams.
